The pipes of Yahoo
A few weeks ago I discovered Pipes, an Ajax application that Yahoo puts at everybody’s disposal and that can be used to combine RSS feed and other data floating around the web, to create a personal dataset or to remix other information and then publish it.
I had briefly tried it but then, not having found an immediate use for this technology I had put it aside. Then, a few days ago, I needed the ability to combine three feed from the University of Florence to obtain a final feed that would be easier to manage than the three single ones in order to publish it here.
So I used Pipes. The interface is quite intuitive and fun and it should be easy enough to use even by someone lacking any specific programming experience, a minimal familiarity with the instruments of the net and some will to experiment will be helpful though.
At this point you just need to choose the data source, filter it if needed and combine it with the otehrs. There are enough automated procedures to make this painful even when the feed source is a site that doesn’t cooperate too much. The interesting part is that Pipes can also be used to mix feeds and other data, such as images from Flickr (yeah, shameless plug for my pics)… lots of fun ahead.
