Yesterday in the mail I receiveda copy of “Natura 2000 –  Protecting Europe’s biodiversity“, a book by the European Commission that highlights the most important natural areas of Europe, areas that need to be protected to ensure their survival. (The book is free and can be requested in the EU bookshop at the link above).

It’s a very nice book and the news is that they used one picture I had taken underwater, showing some red coral. The picture is a normal photo, nothing spectacular, but I really liked to see that the editors discovered it on Flickr, asked my permission to print it and then sent me the copy of the book.

They’d offered to pay something for the pic, but being it for a good cause, for a “for free” book and being a normal pic I just asked for a copy of the book and the photocredit.

In the past 10 years I’ve had over 400 articles (and counting) articles published in several scuba diving magazines, with pics too, still this was nice.

Domanda da agosto inoltrato, lo so. Eppure è una di quelle cose che ogni tanto mi torna in mente e che quindi pongo qui. Premetto che non c’è nessun intento di giudicare chi conosce una lingua e chi non la conosce. Premetto anche che userò la lingua inglese come esempio, per la semplice ragione che la maggioranza delle canzoni non-italiane che vengono ascoltate in Italia è, appunto, in inglese.

La gente ascolta la musica, italiana e straniera, e alcuni brani diventano “le hit del momento”, alcuni restano per un periodo in cima alle classifiche e poi spariscono, altri diventano classici e rimangono per anni.

Nella mia esperienza sono pochissimi, compresi quelli che comprendono e parlano un inglese discreto, che cercano di capire il testo (o che lo capiscono mentre lo ascoltano) e meno ancora quelli che, non comprendendolo durante l’ascolto, cercano in rete i testi (lyrics) per capire cosa dice il brano che in quel momento apprezzano.

Da qui il dubbio che il successo di una canzone inglese in Italia sia dovuto solo alla sua orecchiabilità o a quanto piacciono la melodia o il ritmo?

Nota: questo probabilmente vale anche per altri Paesi dove l’inglese non è diffusissimo.

Un divertimento cattivello e puerile, ma per le serate d’estate è valido, rimane quello di tradurre qualche brano agli amici per fargli scoprire che la canzone che ascoltano ossessivamente e che credono sia un testo impegnato sul futuro del mondo, o sia la colonna sonora della loro storia d’amore, è invece un insulso ritornello o magari un brano triste che racconta le vicende di due amanti separati dal destino (cambiare esempi a volontà a seconda del contesto) .

So after some attempts, ok a lot of attempts, I got a wi fi connection with the repeater. The trick wasn’t the configuration, quite easy from the online menu on the AP, rather than finding the position at the edge of the signal coming from the original wireless router. That did prove difficult. Also getting the signal to go one floor upstairs and some 15 meters away from the repeater is not that easy given that the beam has to cross some quite thick walls. I’ve found a EZ-12 reflector quite useful in boosting and directing the signal (also, the only cost is glue, paper, scissor an patience), but I have some more tweaking to do, with the aim of being able to move around the 4 by 3 meters room without having to stay on the bed to get a signal.

Starting on January 2, 2008, that’s 9 days ago, I got a job at a client’s office some 100 miles from where I live. The accommodation I moved into for these few months has wi-fi but the signal doesn’t arrive to my room, so I’m planning to try and use a spare USR2249 AP that I had laying around my office as a repeater. Local attempts at repeating with my Netgear D834G seem to have been succesfull… we will see how the USR2249 fares with a few centuries old thick walls.
